Just testing the water for any bass players preferably in the NW of England, interested in a new Simple Minds project I've been thinking about since quitting Sample Minds?
Obviously I want this to be at the high standards that I had with Sample Minds, but I want the bass to be the forefront and driving force behind the music.
Anybody seriously interested please let me know.
cheers
Dave

I'd give you a shot Derek!
Basically looking into starting another Simple Minds tribute band but covering the early years, probably up to and including New Gold Dream.
Probably throw in a few hits but re-arranged and a bit more electronic.
Been mulling it over for a while now, even tried something with a former Sample Minds member and Billy Sloane came to see us.
cheers

Yeah, this was the set we did at Pivo's in Glasgow 2005.
Scar
30 frames a second
Love Song
This earth that you walk upon
Don't you forget about me 2003
Theme for great cities
This fear of gods
70 cities as love brings the fall
Dolphins cameo
Celebrate / Waterfront
New Gold Dream
In trance as mission
Room
Even got Loretta dancing!!
get rid of Dolphins, throw in the likes of Dead Vandals, Here Come the Fool, Premonition, I Travel, Sweat in Bullet, Promised You a Miracle, King is White and a radical re-work of Alive and Kicking and a full on War Babies then I think it can be interesting.
It's always the period I've wanted to cover when I thought of a Simple Minds tribute band.
Leave the greatest hits to Simple Minds, 4GM and the other tribute bands.
This could be a nice alternative.
cheers

This really sounds interesting, Dave!
Enough people love the early works, so don't think it will be a bad move! Go for it! _________________ You know I can't resist you!

Thought they'd be a few bass players that were influenced by Derek here?
Yeah, I've had the idea for years, especially the sound of the Sons & Fasc tour. The early gigs I did with the tribute band we put songs like Wasteland, Chelsea Girl, Pleasantly Disturbed, King is White and Room mixed with the hits. I even had a backing track for Calling Your Name ready.
But most of the band didn't want to play the early stuff. The bass player even finds Waterfront boring, although he doesn't think there was more to that main bassline!
But during the Floating World tour, I got to speak to many fans who'd been fans of the band from the early days but lost touch after Sparkle.
There's a lot of great early songs don't really get a look in any more.
cheers

I think the early works are the best songs ever written.
They are filled with creativity and I am thrilled that Derek and Mick started the Sons of Dan project.
You having plans to do about the same is something I would welcome very much. The period of the Sons & Fascination album is, in my humble opinion, the best musical period of Simple Minds. _________________ You know I can't resist you!

When I heard Premonition a few years a go, I was speaking to Bruce Findlay and he agreed that it still sound as good today as it did, what, 30 years ago!
Factory sounded great on the B&W tour, and I liked Seeing Out the Angel for the 1st time.
But I think both albums Sons and Fasc/Sister Feeling are timeless. |

Dave,
did you strangle your bas player till he said he was your friend? That's what I would have done. Ther are four bass parts in Waterfront, unfortunately your man may not have heard them. The whole melody was written on fretless bass, which was played over the top of what we call 'the pulse'. Stay Evil

Derek,
there were many a time when I/we wanted to throttle our bass player!
especially when we tried I Travel!! never played that again
I read somewhere in the past that you said that there were 4 bass parts on Waterfront, but he only played "the pulse" and there was a sample on the backing track!
That's why this time around I really want somebody who knows your stuff and has a chorus pedal!!
cheers
