Mind2Mode aka Sample Minds played a cracker of a gig at the Limelight, Crewe on 11 November. Those who were at Rotherham will remember their great contribution to what turned out to ba an incredible event. Here is a review I've done of the Crewe gig.
My friend Maureen and myself got to Crewe quite handy, so we could have something to eat before the gig. We called in at the Duke Of Gloucester, which is by the Travelodge just outside the town centre. After our meal, we met up with Andrea, Jim and their two friends and spent an hour or so chatting before we headed off to try to find the Limelight.. Maureen and I have been there quite a few times, but somehow Crewe has this ability to get us lost either on the way there or on the way home!! This time around it surpassed itself.. we managed it both ways!! Anyway, back to the night..
We got to the venue at about 7.30pm and parked the car up on the Limelight car park. We paid our way in, and then bumped into Jacky just outside the concert hall. I asked if there was any chance of us catching the soundcheck, and he kindly allowed us into the room. I love the Limelight.. It has a nice sized dance floor, with ledges allowing seating area around the side. There is also a raised level where you can get a really decent view without worries of having to stand for the duration of a gig. It holds various gig memories for me.. The Clone Roses, Monument, Sample Minds/Mind2Mode and Westworld, so it was nice to make this welcome return.
Maureen and I chatted with Steve during the soundcheck, when his vocals were not required elsewhere , and spoke to Simon afterwards. Then we left the band to continue their pre-gig preparations before retiring back to the bar where we met up with Andrea and co. The concert room was now open so we made a beeline back and found a place on the ledging to the left hand side of the stage.
Mind2Mode came onstage soon after 9.30pm and started off with their Simple Minds set. They sounded as tight as ever, and Love Song set the tone for other classics which followed. Steve looked me right in the eye at one point later in the set.. and uttered the words "I'm coming down" as part of the lyrics.. I took this to be the cue for another Rotherham moment where he was going to join us on the dance floor, so I sort of nodded and grinned and there you go.. We had a rerun of the offstage jigging!! This time around though, I almost went flying, and managed to keep on my feet by pinching his shirt. I think I may have nipped him in the process, so if he's reading this, I throw in my apology now.. It was either that or me going flying and bringing him down with me
All too soon, the Simple Minds set was done and dusted.. then it was time for Depeche Mode. I really enjoyed this set, though I didn't recognise all the tracks. It was great to see the locals really get into it too. Maureen really enjoyed this part of the set.. I think she was more of a DM fan than SM or U2. There was a very short break before the U2 part of the show.. I loved this part. The variety of the U2 numbers was something else. I loved Discotheque, which I'd heard them do in the soundcheck .. If anything I preferred the Mind2Mode - maybe it was because I wasn't distracted by the Village People type outfits that U2 wore on the Discotheque video? Please guys.. don't even consider it!!
At the end of the U2 set, the crowd were calling for more, especially Simple Minds. There didn't seem any malice in it though, although I take my hat off to Simon for handling the situation well. The band duly obliged with rounding things off with Alive And Kicking and Room, before finishing the night off, and bringing an almighty grin to Maureen's face by playing Just Can't Get Enough, which seemed more than apt. I'm certain that the crowd would have been happy enough to let the band go beyond their 2.5 hours slot.
A great night, and here's to the next time..
