BIG COUNTRY – celebrate 25 years
Big Country formed 25 years ago in 1982. 2008 will be the 25th Anniversary of their first chart successes with singles like Fields of Fire, In A Big Country and Chance, which all came from their multiplatinum debut album The Crossing .
The band broke massively worldwide with The Crossing, which sold over 3 million copies and earned them 2 Grammy nominations and international success. Their subsequent four albums, Steeltown (which debuted at No: 1 in 1984), The Seer (1986), Peace In Our Time (1988) and No Place Like Home (1991) were all certified gold on releases and continued the bands high chart performance. Big Country were guests at Live Aid and The Princes Trust 10th Birthday Party and in 1988 they played the first ever privately promoted gig in Russia at the Moscow Sports Stadium. At the end of that decade Through A Big Country, featuring all the bands classic hits was released and went in the chart at no: 2 and sold over a million copies.
In the 90s, the band continued to release successful albums. The Buffalo Skinners (1993) and Why The Long Face (1995) and toured the UK and European consistently including two tours opening for The Rolling Stones in Europe. They had more hit singles ( Alone & Ships). The decade culminated with the release of the highly critically acclaimed album Driving To Damascus (1999) demonstrating the bands tenacity and survival instincts in the notoriously tough business that is music. The band decided to take a break in 2000 and embarked on The Final Fling tour of UK and Germany. These dates were to be their last.
Tragically, Stuart Adamson passed away in 2001.
In part, due to it being the bands 25th anniversary next year Tony, Mark and Bruce are uniting to celebrate this landmark.
“We thought it would be cool to get together again, and go out and play some intimate shows, and play some of the back catalogue (some of the hits, as well as some of the popular tracks we didn't play much live in the past) and give the fans what they have been crying out for” says Bruce Watson.
“For many years I did not think, to try and even think, that Big Country could exist without Stuart Adamson. We were a unique band. But that was then. The years have moved on and the desire to play music with my old friends has become too much to resist. The Big country we all remember will forever have a place in our hearts, but Big Country will continue with a renewed spirit and passion, a new adventure. We just want to have fun”.
Tony Butler.
“It felt the right time to continue the journey with Big Country not only out of respect to our wonderful past, but with renewed optimism for the future.
We could never replace Stuart, so we haven't, but have now evolved and proudly carry on the natural progression that he would have expected and been proud of”. says Mark Brzezicki.
Initially, two gigs in Scotland were booked last month, but the subsequent demand and interest from the fans has resulted in further dates after the Scottish Gigs Sold Out.

”This isn't a come-back...its just the 3 of us having fun, as friends and as a band, and hoping to give the fans some enjoyment by playing our songs live. The last time we played BC songs together was 7 years ago at the Glasgow Barrowland, 31st May 2000. Big Country is the greatest band I have ever been in. Turns out Tony and Mark feel exactly the same. This is our band, we are 3 great mates, and as great as it has been playing with other artists in the last 7 years, when the 3 of us get together, that is us at our best and happiest”. Bruce Watson
