MIDGE URE, ALTERED IMAGES, CHINA CRISIS

Just thought I'd tell you all about the South Tyneside Summer Festival Concert I went to last Sunday afternoon. It was held in Bents Park at South Shields, a stones throw away from the Amphitheatre....well, if you've got long arms that is Wink

Anyway, there were three acts playing a short set and these were Altered Images, China Crisis and last but certainly not least...Midge Ure. The weather was great and the neighbouring car parks and overflows were full to the brim making car parking a nightmare. Still, it was a measure of how many people had flocked to the area to see the event so everything was set up for a great afternoon.

After making a quick phone call and sending an email out a couple of days previously, I found myself in posession of an ACCESS ALL AREAS pass so I made my way into the park and headed for the security gate round the back of the stage. It was around 1.30pm at this point with the first act, Altered Images, due to take the stage at approximately 1.45pm. That gave me a few minutes to decide what settings I was using on my camera before I went through security and into the small compound where the artists were preparing themselves for the show. There were a couple of portacabins, portaloos etc but no familiar faces just yet, maybe they were inside their luxurious changing rooms that were the portacabins Shocked

I decided to go round the front of the stage as the compere had started speaking to the crowd on the P.A system. Within a few minutes Altered Images were on stage, greeted by an enthusiastic audience. I say Altered Images but it was actually a house band with Clare Grogan on lead vocals. The house band stayed on stage to play with the China's and Midge later on. At this point I started taking a few shots of Clare who was looking very nice indeedy. Being pre-occupied with the camera I missed quite a bit of what was going on, I remember the songs...
I Could Be Happy,
See Those Eyes,
Happy Birthday,
Don't Talk To Me About Love
There were one or two others which I can't remember Crying or Very sad

I was only allowed at the front stage for two songs that each of the artists played so once that had happened I went round the back stage area, up the steps and onto the stage itself. Hey, I couldn't believe me luck !!! The band weren't bothered about the flash going off, they just played away oblivious to it.

Next up were China Crisis, I was standing at the top of the steps that lead onto the stage when I turned around and Gary and Eddy were standing right behind me waiting to go on. I had a few words and took a photo of them together, they were well up for the show and couldn't wait to get on. I watched them take to the stage before making my way back round the front to take more photo's.
They played the songs.....
African And White,
Wishful Thinking,
Black Man Ray,
Christian,
You Did Cut Me,
King In A Catholic Style
The banter between songs was quite funny, Eddy being the entertainer of the two. A picture of the lads together on stage.....

Last on stage was Midge Ure. I had been lurking round backstage in the hope of seeing Midge before he went on. Being a massive fan of Ultravox in the 80's I couldn't wait to see him on stage with a band. I never did get to see Ultravox play before they eventually split up in 1986, I saw Midge last year on his acoustic tour but I didn't think much of it to be honest. Just him and an acoustic guitar....well Crying or Very sad

I got chatting to a young girl backstage who asked me to take her photo with Midge. He was sitting having a can of beer and chatting to someone so we waited our turn. The sun was beating down and the atmosphere at front stage was great, the Shields Gazette reported that 15,000 people were in the park for the show ! Shocked The opportunity presented itself so we went over and chatted briefly with the main man before taking a couple of photographs. Both the band and Midge went over to the steps and prepared to go on stage. The compere introduced Midge but it was the band who took to the stage. Midge, making last second adjustments to his earpiece chatted briefly again as the sun beat down....
"It was f*cking pissing down when we left home, look at it now" he said. Laughing Laughing

It was now that I got a couple of great shots of Midge before he went on stage. No sign of nerves whatsoever although he did pick some muck out of his fingernails with his plectrum...he he Laughing
The band started the intro of 'Hymn' and when he took to the stage to rapturous applause and sang the opening line 'Giiiiive us...thiiiiiis day......all that you showed me' I must say that the hairs on me little old neck were standing tall Shocked
Again, I went straight round front stage and snapped away like some madman who had to fill up his 1 gigabyte memory card otherwise his balls would be chopped off....he he.
He played the songs
Hymn,
Fade To Grey,
Loves Great Adventure,
If I Was,
Vienna,
No Regrets
and the encore 'Dancing With Tears In My Eyes'

Brilliant, that's all I can say really. There were lots of people hanging around side stage hoping to get a shot of Midge. I went down the steps and asked this elderly man if he wanted a couple of photo's of Midge. He said 'Yes Please' so I took his camera and went back up onto the stage and took a few for him. His face lit up when I gave him the camera back, that was me good deed for the day. Anyway, it was job done and off for a pint and to check the
prize on me camera.

Here's a few of those photo's....

I'll be uploading ALL of the photo's from the event on my new website that I'm building, there's even one of me with Midge Shocked I'm off on holiday this weekend but the site will be going 'Live' as soon as I'm happy with it. Shouldn't be too long. It's a site dedicated to my 'Live Music Photography' so I'll keep you posted.

Anyway, that's it folks, not much in the way of Gossip from the gig Loretta, sorry pet Embarassed , hope ya liked me little review anyway.....and the photo's....the best is yet to come [says he Rolling Eyes ]

Hey John Boy, that picture of yours...is it Adam Clayton from U2 ?

Jean Genie, if you were right at the front last Sunday you may have seen me inside the fence taking photographs as I was the only one there for the best part. Funnily enough I took a couple of photo's of the audience at the front. Were you sitting near the old fella who'd made a hat out of his 'News Of The World' newspaper ??? Shocked If so then you may be on the photo. Wink Glad you passed on my regards in Greenock, I heard that you mentioned me Wink

Hey JG, one thing that sticks out in my mind was when Midge was doing 'Dancing With Tears In My Eyes' and I looked out from the side of the stage and saw this girl singing along, she new ALL the words and I knew instantly that she must be a big fan of his, probably loved Ultravox too. She was wearing a navy blue Superman top and somehow my instincts tell me that she was your friend Caroline.....am I right ???

He he, of course I am Wink

Good idea to sit with your shoes off too, swelterin' it was.
Jean Genie

Yep, Caroline was the one with the Superman t-shirt on.. I was next to her, also bopping away.. though not quite hornpipe fashion a la Amphitheatre, Wink
Loretta

Glad you all had a good day Wink
