opinion poll for last gig

Dear all,
could you let us know if you thought our last show was an improvement or not. We are having a Band curry meeting on Friday, so it would be good to have an assessment from your good selves. I am working like mad to get my studio up and running, and am insanely going for new tunes. Hope you are all well. Your input means everything to us.

Hola Senior!

I think it was absolutley fantastic!
Much better than last year, and that was a great gig as well!
I think Carrie got an fantastic voice, and the Belfast Child version was the best i heard so far (inkl SM). Continue to work with hear on vocals for some songs  even in the future!
It was incredible to hear Changeling, Chelsea Girl and Pleasantly Disturbed, and i know you got more to choose from Twisted Evil

You did a great job on vocals as well Derek,  both on Changeling and CG.
And if you teach Graeme Duffin to play the guitar
on Changeling correct, it will be a fantastic livesong in the future and then you can concentrate on the vocal better Wink
Im not a big fan of Dont You, Someone and Alive & Kicking, but maybe you have to play them live...
The Classic Grand was a perfect venue in my opinion!

And of course it would be great to hear some new songs as well. Its been over one year since we heard anything new from you guys!

8/10

I have to agree with Patrik in all he wrote...
You guys seem extremely busy, would like some new FGM songs! Cool

As Patrik wrote, a great live gig!!!!

/D
ALI BIN TABNAB

More new songs, set Ian away with some music and he'll do the rest!
No more Simple Minds songs, the ones you already play are great, but sufficient.
'Sons Of Dan' - Carrie's in her zone, well and truly. With the right promotion this project could really take off.
'Heart Of Wonder' and 'Kiss Cool'  should be revisited and pushed again, to find their true potential.

Keep up the good work.
Tabnab   Cool
Edith

I must agree with all of the above.

I think the gig was really great, the best I've heard so far.
And I agree that we need more FourGoodMen songs, and less Simple Minds and Big Country songs in future. But that's a logical way to go, I think.
Don't get me wrong, I hope you will keep performing the early Simple Minds songs like Changeling, because that's making my heart jump every single time! And Big Country songs do make the audience go crazy!  Wink

I can only say one word of critisism: the microphones for Derek's and Carrie's singing weren't set right. Their sound wasn't loud enough, the music covered their voices too much.

Can't wait to hear the new material!!
billy

Hi
I did'nt get to recent gig, sounded great by all accounts, but i'd like to see Minds songs dropped in favour of new 4GM material, Heart of Wonder's great live. OneTwo (Paul Humphreys and Clauia Brucken) started out doing their own songs from past till an album was done, now they perform the album and keep a few old songs for encore, they were great when i seen them.

I love the Minds songs but feel don't You and Alive and Someone somewhere are performed a little bit too much by yourselves and Simple Minds, this is not meant to take anything away from those songs, i know they do go down well and it's impossible to keep everyone happy, but what you did with Pleasantly disturbed and reworking of Premonition was fantastic, and working In Trance with Kraftwerk was amazing, Sons of Dan have  a future along with 4GM, i'd rather hear reworkings of more obsure minds tracks than the predictable ones.

Looking forward to seeing you's again

Keep 'em coming. Good valid points that we will take onboard. I have been working away on music today, and it is sounding good...buit needs to be great. My problem is that I am still setting up my studio, but I'm almost there...

Absolutely LOVED the gig, your xmas/new year bashes are just getting better and better(you MUST keep this gig up!!,it's almost as traditional as turkey for dinner now!! Very Happy )
I loved the mix of songs and vocalists, you all did a sterling job
Agree with Ash that Heart of Wonder and Kiss cool should be revisited and re-pushed.
How about more songs from H2O ("Just outside of heaven" for example)

The venue I feel was the best yet(but I'm biased, love gigs at the Grand) and the downstairs afterparty was superb(you gotta book there next year..btw,did you know you could have had a  projection screen behind you, either movies clips or other films you choose or have the band live on the screen from camersa in the stage,..at leat you could do early last year Smile )
Loretta

I think it was an improvement indeed as far as covering the earlier SM songs and Carries wonderful voice.. I agree with alot of what the other guys have said as far as Heart of wonder and Kisscool, I must admit Dont you is prob my least fave SM song that doesnt get me going too much.. Laughing

Would you consider doing more earlier SM stuff with you on vocals Derek?.. I did love Changeling , I am sure you could polish them up  Very Happy

Yes, and more stuff from Ian, I agree with Will there, Dream to sleep is lovely but it would be nice to hear more  songs from him..

It was a great venue and I did enjoy it more than last years gig at the arches, we wait in anticipation for the new stuff Derek

Love ya xxxxxxxxxxxx

Roll on the new stuff  Very Happy
FUNFOXYLADY007

Hi Guys  Very Happy

I thought Classic Grand great place to play aye as Will says keep up the end of year tradition  Very Happy and the wee disco afterwards  Very Happy

I know you feel that the SM/Big Country songs will pull in the crowds but I also agree the BC songs should be dropped as Bruce is no longer with you and although Ian and band do a cracking version then you become to complaicent (did I spell that right) in writing new tunes to fill the gaps.
Kisscool and other new songs will still bring in the crowds no worries just more new songs please  Very Happy

Also I agree you should bring in other great SM songs as you did in Dec. "Don't get me wrong" is always on the set what happened to "Duel" ? which Janes powers out just as good.

I also think at the gig you really all gelled together and Graeme looking really comfy with tunes  Very Happy
Carrie and girls could have a song written that they can belt out  Very Happy

PS Being an H20 Fan (not that you hadn't guessed) I'd like to here more of Ian's songs "Sundays are Blue" or "Don't stop the rain"

Please Dont Sing The Sun Aint gonna Shine or you'll see me bawling my eyes out all the time  Crying or Very sad  Crying or Very sad
Aye Ian's version has me in tears (but I love it ha) but it ruins the mascara lol  Laughing  Laughing

I just like to add
MORE NEW TUNES AND MORE GIGS PLEASE FOR 2008
Love to ya guys

I would love to hear Ian sing his version of The sun aint gonna shine anymore..  Very Happy  maybe thats something I will just have to keep to myself, dont know wether you think it would "Fit"  in the set I dunno..

Yes more new songs, I am sure the band wont disappoint.
ALI BIN TABNAB

On second thoughts maybe it wouldn't sit too well in the current set. Let's have Ian singing something else, h2o perhaps...

Never mind then. Just giving feedback as requested.  Smile

What about 'Blue Diamond'? i think that one will go down well live.

Don't think you can ever please everyone with setlists no matter who you are, as i said you could drop alive & kicking, don't you and someone somewhere, but some people would always turn up expecting these 'classics', more more new stuff please, i do hope you also continue revamping lesser known minds tracks and continue with 4GM.
ALI BIN TABNAB

What about 'Little Bag Of Grapes'
dforbes

New songs would be more preferable methinks

Back on track, looking forward to the new stuff Derek. In your own time squire.
Oh, and get that studio finished eh,  Wink
BAlmighty

I thought the December gig was the best you have done since I first saw you in Ivory Blacks in 2005.

Its good that you do the old SM songs. Nobody else is doing them, not even the tribute bands so I think there is an opportunity, even if its not as FGM or Sons Of Dan.

Another area you could consider is reworking some traditional tunes. One example is Belfast Child which you already do.  Simple Minds did a nice version of She Moved Through The Fair on the Billy Sloan show  a few years ago and also reworked Dark Island into Rivers Of Ice (Real Life album)

I like the fact the line up changes throughout the night.

As much as I like the set, with the exception of Boys Keep Swing and Dont Get Me Wrong, I think its probably too SM oriented - yes I said that LOL.  Shocked   I would love to hear Pablo Picasso which would tie in with  SM and Bowie. More Propaganda would be nice. How about reworking something from Micks PPT album ?

Also I think you should play New Gold Dream, song not the album ( although I would not complain LOL) because its the one song that gets everyone going at a SM gig.

Eventually, I would prefer to see FGM as an original act  with the majority of the set based on their own music, not SM, H2O or Big Country.

Anyway keep up the good work.  Very Happy

Good points Bruce  Wink

I say 'Unleash Sons Of Dan'
time to step up to the plate me thinks, and Carrie has a lot to bring to the table  Wink  Cool  Cool  Cool

I heard Ian do  the Walker Bros classic an I thought it was wonderful, somethin in his voice,  maybe not right for the set I agree, just wonderin..

More Celtic stuff.. I do love that, I love heart of Wonder.. but yeah, new songs would be brilliant  that would be the real test  Smile

I rate the Classic Grand gig as my favourite 4GM gig. It was great to hear Pleasantly Disturbed, Chelsea Girl and Changeling played live. I would have loved the celtic traditional stuff included, as an intro to the encore, maybe leading into Heart Of Wonder/In A Big Country as the last number of the night. I would consider dropping Don't Get Me Wrong, maybe replacing it with Duel, which we haven't heard live for some time. Please keep Boys Keep Swinging in there (sorry Bruce  Wink ), as Dianne would not be impressed if that one bit the bullet!! Maybe bring Starman back in once in a while, or introduce Heroes.. More H2O stuff please - Blue Diamond, All That Glitters, Who'll Stop The Rain.. Ian may suggest something that will work better than others. Has Graeme got permission from the Wets to do one of their songs? Just a thought.. If not, you could always get away with With A Little Help From My Friends  Smile

I loved the idea of the rotation of lead vocals.. Derek and Carrie can more than hold their own, and certain songs really suited them. I would like to see a variation in sets. However it would be a shame to see some songs that we know and love go completely.

A last thought.. any chance of doing a Spear number?? The ones that come to mind are Tinseltown, Never Take Me Alive and Pumpkin Man.
Loretta

Enjoy the curry, have one for us  Very Happy
FlyingScotsman

Having chatted with Derek after the gig about SOD I can reveal he can actually sing Never Take Me Alive, he gave us a few lines - "Before the law kick in the door" and has the green light from Kirk to use it I believe. I suggested St Pauli Girl also as Derek co-wrote with Kirk.

Would be good to hear some Spear in the set, but then I am hugely biased!!
Maybe you will play some if the great Aberdeen gig happens one day!!

Cheers,  Flying Scotsman

Aye how did the curry go Derek?  Still recovering?

Sorry didn't get chance to put my two peneth in last week.  Agree with lots of the above I'd love to hear more early Minds in preference to the traditional hits. An addition of "Sweat in bullet" would keep Jim happy to Del  Wink.  Really loved the Xmas additions!!  The gig was fantastic by the way the best yet and I loved the venue (hope you are booking it again this year?).

Looking forward to hearing more of the new stuff.  Sons of Dan or 4GM don't really mind love it all (and sharing the vocals is a great idea although I do love Ian singing "Stars will fall"  Wink ) I like the BC stuff but if you dropped one to include some WWW or Propaganda or more H20 that would be fine by me to.  I actually like "Don't get me wrong" but then I love the Pretenders.  Looking forward to more great gigs ordered tickets for Braehead already! Do you think there will be a new disc for us this year? Really hope so the other one is getting a bit knackered now (like me LOL)!

Have a great week!

Hi Flying Scotsman (I take it you're the same FS who is on the Babylontalks forum?)

Derek sang NTMA acoustically at the after show party at Rotherham last August, and it went down pretty well.

I am indeed that same Flying Scotsman, a big SOD fan and obviously my taste crosses over to include 4GM.

LOL Tabs.. you are a cheeky monkey..

My only connection with the Wombles was seeing Mike Batt sharing the stage with Katie Melua at Guilfest one year  Smile

And the rest Shirl, and the rest...
Weren't you responsible for organising Womblefest '80.
I heard you arranged a meet-up in Basingstoke which was attended by Womble fans from all over the world. You were spotted in Basingstoke Maccy-dee's wearing an Uncle Bulgaria sweatshirt....or was it Orinoco?

Dem were da days eh pet  Wink

Funnily enough, Ash - There's a friend of mine on Sosimpleminded (also used to be on the old Simple Minds Community forum) called Trace, otherwise known as Panther, who used to have a thing about the Wombles. I found Great Uncle Bulgaria at a school toy fair - cost me all of 50p!! Cheapest pressie I've ever bought for anyone in recent years..

btw, are you going to see Dead Men Walking in Newcastle in March??
ALI BIN TABNAB

Well I've booked the night off so I will try to get along, if nowt else crops up.
Probably get me ticket on the door as I doubt it will be sold out.
BTW, what is Academy 1&2, on the Newcastle date?
I thought it was just called Carling Academy  Question
Cheers
Jean Genie

Are there two rooms at the same venue? That would be my guess, Ash. I hadn't noticed that when Simple Minds played there, so I could be wrong.
Pamie

Thought the gig was good, but it wasn't my favourite so far (sorry  Embarassed  ). The sound wasn't great for Jane or Carrie's vocals...it seemed to be fine for Ian but quieter for the girls

Personally, I'd really like to hear Jane do a couple of songs at each gig. Dianne has suggested 'Hymn to Her' by The Pretenders...haven't heard her do Duel but she has such a lovely voice, so I'm sure it's fab. Would really love to hear her do more.......

P.S Please dont drop 'Boys...'
dforbes

You will Pamie. With the turn around of musicians, it is quite dificult to remember who has played what in te past. Not everyone had played Duel . or Jane would have sung it no problem. Thanks for your input to te forum. Hope your not freezing over there in good old Elderslie, birthplace of WILLIAM WALLACE ( that is for Kelleys benefit, as she is Clan Wallace.

bradwj

well...........cant say that I was any of the last latest gigs  and that I am way late posting this but I am working on my next venture across the pond to see a show but I figured i would give my two cents of input anyway.....
I would say that doing new Songs should be the main focus but keep doing the old tunes  (SM)too......By doing that you will attract old fans and it gives something they can relate too.....
What would I kill to hear...........New Gold Dream!!!!! The best song ever!!! Hint Hint!!!!!!!
