Police may be walking on the moon again

Sting is in talks to re-form The Police and tour with the group - 30 years after they were formed.
The band, who rank alongside The Rolling Stones and The Beatles among the greats of rock, are considering playing a series of dates in the UK next summer. Consisting of Sting on bass and vocals, drummer Stewart Copeland and guitarist Andy Summers, the group have been in discussions for months. They became one of the biggest bands of the Eighties with hits including Walking On The Moon, Every Breath You Take, Don't Stand So Close To Me and Message In A Bottle.
News that they are re-forming will surprise fans as Sting, 55, has always resolutely opposed the move in the past. Sources say rehearsals have been pencilled in to take place before Sting begins the February leg of his latest European tour and after Copeland has finished his stint as a judge in the BBC celebrity duet show Just The Two Of Us. The record label, A&M, is believed to be planning a special anniversary release in June and the tour dates would coincide with that.
A source said: 'They were intending to announce it in January after all the tour dates had been finalised. 'They are speaking to venues about booking dates in May and June. Everyone who knows about it is incredibly excited because they were a legendary band.' A spokeswoman for A&M confirmed discussions had taken place but denied there were any firm dates for concerts. She said: 'Next year is the 30th anniversary of the release of Roxanne, the first Police single. It is our intention to mark the anniversary by doing something special with the band's catalogue of songs.
'Needless to say, everyone is hopeful the band will support our plans and while early discussions have taken place, nothing has been decided.' Miles Copeland, the former manager of The Police and brother of Stewart, said: 'It's the 30th anniversary and there has been mention of this for some time, but I can't comment.'
Stewart formed The Police in 1977 with Sting. Miles recognised the power of their blend of pop, punk and reggae and got them a record deal when he heard Roxanne, the first of many worldwide hits.

Hi James. This sounds really great. I would love to see the band live, but I guess the tickets will be like golddust.. Here's hoping though Smile

I've still got my copy of Roxanne on blue vinyl in good condition.. wouldn't part with it for any money though. It's my first bite of Police history!! Smile
Will

I think Shirl means it was the first Police record she bought Will, unless I'm mistaken.

I'd love to see them play live and would imagine the tickets would indeed be like rocky horse shit, but fingers crossed eh.

Hey,Will, you're up late aren't ya Wink

Will, the first Police single was actually FALLOUT b/w Nothing Achieving released on Miles Copeland's Illegal Records and had Henry Padovani on guitar rahter than Andy who replaced Henry shortly thereafter. It say on the sleeve it was produced by Stewart Copeland and Bazza January 1977. Miles gave it to me when I met him while I was in college at a Squeeze show.

I'm really excited about this. I was so sorry that I didn't manage to see The Police at the Apollo before they disbanded, and I've always wished they would re-form. I've seen Sting in solo concerts.

I have Outlandos d'Amour, Regatta de Blanc and Zenyatta Mondatta on vinyl, and Ghost in the Machine and Synchronicity on tape, and a Greatest Hits on CD, but none of the other compilations listed on Wikipedia.

I'd pay just about anything to see Sting, Stewart and Andy play together again.

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

The Police Will Kick Off the Grammys

The Police Will Kick Off the Grammys
AP
NEW YORK (Jan. 30) - The Police will reunite to open the 49th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on February 11, The Recording Academy said on Tuesday, fueling speculation that the hit 1980s band is planning a reunion tour.

The five-time Grammy-winning band, led by frontman Sting , with Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers, split up in 1984 and was last seen playing together in 2003 to commemorate their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The band, known for such hits as "Roxanne," "Message in a Bottle" and "Every Breath You Take," has never performed at the annual telecast for the music industry's most prestigious awards that are given by The Recording Academy.

"The Police join a stellar list of past Grammy Awards opening acts, which includes reunions and once-in-a-lifetime performances," said a statement from the academy.

Members of The Police have so far refused to confirm rumors that the band is planning to reunite in 2007 for dates in Britain and the United States, with this year marking the 30th anniversary of the release of "Roxanne."

Last month the band's label A&M Records, which is owned by Universal Music, said in a statement that they would mark the year somehow.

"It is our intention to mark the anniversary by doing something special with the band's catalog of songs. Needless to say, everyone is hopeful the band will support our plans and while early discussions have taken place, nothing has been decided," said the statement.

Other presenters at the Grammy Awards include Justin Timberlake , Beyonce , Mary J. Blige , the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Christina Aguilera , Melissa Etheridge and Stevie Wonder .

I hate that I'm going to be further enriching Sting. I wish I could stipulate that my money would only go to Stewart and Andy, LOL (like they're poor...yeah right)!
