Shorty

A little history

Hitting the scene in seventy eight
For Simple Minds it was never too late
Playing the Mars Bar “doon in the toon”,
They were doing their stuff for records called Zoom.

To a frenzy of fans they blasted their stuff,
But life in the fast lane was getting real tough.
In April seventy-nine they made it to thirty.
With “Life in a Day”, they were giving it plenty.

And with the Christmas rush of seventy nine,
Out popped “Cacophony” and everything was fine.
With Zoom down the pan in nineteen eighty,
Schoolhouse Management signed them up hasty.

In the early eighties they were doing it by chance.
With the boys themselves releasing “Empires & Dance”.
When Arista finally let them go free,
They teamed up with Virgin and started climbing the tree.

With” Love Song” and “American” already put down,
It was Hillage who entered wearing a frown.
Eighty-one was tough but they did it in style,
Releasing “Sons and Fascination” and earning a pile !

They “Promised us a Miracle” in eighty-two.
What they delivered was just unbelievably new.
“New Gold Dream” hit us for six,
With that man Walsh putting it all in the mix.

Enter Mel Gaynor in eighty-two,
To put down some sessions ; but only a few.
But eighty-three was truly a year,
When we were “Up on the Waterfront” with the sound in our ears.

Now Lillywhite was in tow and doing the biz,
With “Sparkle in the Rain” most notably his.
A breakneck tour and a trip round the world,
The Minds were back and were flying unfurled.

“Once Upon A Time” started without Derek,
But the boys pulled together and kicked out a classic,
The worldwide tour would take a year to complete
And Amnesty International would back up this great feat.

“All The Things She Said” would “Sanctify” and pass.
The fans wanted more from this excellent class.
“Mandela” came out in nineteen eighty-eight.
He was pushing seventy but it was never too late.

February eighty-nine they scored their first number one.
The “Belfast Child” was never outdone.
McNeil said his peace and departed for good,
While the “Band Played On” and set a new mood.

In ninety-one “Real Life” was in the make,
After which Jim and Charlie took a wee break.
“Glittering Prize” hit the number one spot,
Leaving Simple Minds to wonder what they’d got !

In ninety-five the “Next World” hit the street.
With “She’s a River” pounding the beat,
The Virgin was then gone in the blink of an eye,
Chrysalis entered and the band were back on a high.

Pete Walsh was now back in the chair,
And Mel Gaynor still had no hair !
Neapolis broke to the sound of the lark.
Those industrial rhythms gave them the spark.

A “Glitterball” was shining on March ninety-eight,
While “War Babies” were fighting their way out of the gate.
Charlie & Jim worked closely with Hunter,
But kept “Secrets” so close we could never plunder !

It’s two thousand and two and the lads are still going.
The music continues will all they are throwing.
With “Cry” on the shelves and plenty to sing,
We hope that this music more they will bring.

For me, Taormina was the place to be,
The music, the fans, the sand and the sea.
But we hope and prey that maybe someday,
Simple Minds will be back to show us the way.
